Comparison
Asian Paints Tractor vs Apex — economy or premium for your project?
Tractor is contractor gold for cost-sensitive interior work. Apex earns its keep on exteriors and longer-lifecycle jobs. Here's where each wins.
Asian Paints Tractor and Apex sit on opposite ends of the Asian Paints catalogue. Tractor is the contractor workhorse — economical, dependable, the default for builder-grade flats and rental refreshes. Apex is the exterior-finish flagship — engineered to survive Delhi summers and monsoons over many years.
The right choice depends on the project, not the brand. Here's how we counsel customers in Rohini, Pitampura, and Mangolpuri who walk in unsure which to use.
What each one is built for
Tractor is a value-tier interior emulsion. It washes, it covers in two coats over a properly primed wall, and it does the basic job of giving you a clean coloured wall at a contractor-friendly price. Tractor UNO is its distemper-grade sibling — even more economical for builder-grade or very budget projects.
Apex is the Asian Paints exterior emulsion family. Apex Weatherproof is the everyday workhorse. Apex Ultima is the premium tier with anti-algae and UV-stable technology. Apco extends the line into more economical exterior coverage. All three are designed to take Delhi's punishment — 45°C summers, four-month monsoons, and winter pollution.
When to use Tractor
- Builder-grade flats and rental properties where cost is the dominant constraint
- Interior walls in low-traffic rooms (bedrooms, store rooms)
- Refresh paint jobs over already-painted walls
- Large project volume where the per-litre saving really adds up
- Distemper jobs (use Tractor UNO instead of Tractor Emulsion)
When to use Apex
- Any exterior wall — front facades, balconies, terraces, parapet walls
- Boundary walls and gates exposed to weather
- Areas with monsoon exposure where you cannot afford to repaint every two years
- Project specs that require warranted exterior performance
Pricing
Approximate price band in Delhi as of 2026, per 4 L pack:
- Tractor Emulsion: ₹400–₹600
- Tractor UNO Distemper: ₹250–₹350
- Apco Premier Exterior: ₹1,200–₹1,600
- Apex Weatherproof: ₹1,600–₹2,200
- Apex Ultima: ₹2,400–₹3,200 (premium exterior with anti-algae)
The trade-off is straightforward: Tractor costs less per litre but won't survive direct sun and monsoon for more than 1–2 years. Apex Ultima costs 4–5× as much but easily lasts 5–7 years on a properly prepared exterior wall.
The mistake we see most often
Using Tractor (or any interior emulsion) on exterior walls to save money. It always costs more in the medium term — you'll be repainting within 18 months when the topcoat fades, peels, or algaes over. Exterior walls deserve exterior paint. Apco is the budget exterior option if Apex Weatherproof is too expensive for the project.
What we recommend
Use Tractor for: interior work where cost matters, large-volume contractor jobs, rentals, store rooms. Pair with Sparc Interior Primer for best longevity.
Use Apex (Weatherproof or Ultima) for: all exterior surfaces, boundary walls, terraces, parapets. Pair with Sparc Exterior Primer or Smartcare Primer for damp surfaces.
Use Apco for: budget exterior projects where Apex is too expensive but Tractor would clearly fail.
